The sand has something new to show each day, and within each day. Natural art is created by the tides - incoming from and outgoing back to the sea. Various beach creatures also create wonderful patterns in the sand as they go about their lives…
Who can resist the beauty of the ocean? The magic of the sun sparkling on the moving water, the contrast of white foam on gray or tan sand, the crash of a wave or just before as the wind blows back the curl…
The sky above the beach can produce some wondrous images that can change within minutes - dawn, dusk, an oncoming storm or the varying winds. Oh, and when those birds take flight…
There are a variety of living things on the beach in Maine and it’s always exciting to catch them - with my camera.
This live sand dollar was pushing up out of the sand in the early morning light. These creatures have tiny cilia over the shell that they use to move along the sand. Maine sand dollars do no have a keyhole like southern species.
There are so many different species of birds that can be see on or over the beach. The selection varies over the course of the year but they are always fascinating to watch.
The southern Maine coast is home to multiple species of seagulls, sandpipers and other coastal birds. We, luckily, have the opportunity to see Piping Plovers which is a Federally protected shore bird that is endangered in Maine. They nest and breed each here each spring.
There are many different types of shells on the beach where I live. The ocean brings them ashore and arranges them nicely for us to appreciate…
It’s beautiful to see the reflection of things in the surf when the sun is just at the right angle. The ribbon of bubbles from the recent wave were a bonus.
There are many types of ocean flora that fall under the category of seaweed. It is beautiful to see the morning sun filter through sea kelp in the surf or rockweed arranged in the sand by the ocean tide…
Oh, the excitement to find a whole sand dollar! The lovely shells with the flower like pattern are actually the skeletons of this simple creature. The Common Sand Dollars found in Maine do not have the keyhole like the species found in Florida and other southern areas.
The live sand dollars are a dark maroon color and leave an interesting trail as they move across the sand. Their skeletons fade to gray and become whiter as they age when washed up in the surf.
No two are alike and the top patterns vary widely. Sometimes, the bottom of the shell also have interesting, beautiful patterns.
Everyone loves getting a card in the mail! Let’s face it, an electronic greeting just isn’t the same.
These blank cards are very popular and come in 4 different sets. Custom sets of selected images can be made on request.
I was inspired to incorporate items I find on the beach into decorative stained glass pieces.
The is a piece I made for my newly renovated kitchen instead of a boring window shade.
Original design of the beach - from sand to sea - with embedded shells found out there.
Custom pieces could be made. This piece measures ~31” wide x 10.5” high..
